Over 40% of South Dakotans work ten miles or more from home, according to the US Census Bureau. Here at PorchLight, we wanted to understand how far into rural areas the direct economic impact of jobs in major population centers stretches in our home state of South Dakota.

This interactive map shows what percentage of the labor force in each zip code in South Dakota work within the city limits of one of the top ten population centers. The different colors are used only to differentiate between each population center, with a darker hue indicating a higher percentage of workers working in that population center.

Hover over any area for more information. Gray zip codes without a percentage listed have a commute rate under 15% to any of the top ten population centers.
